Himalayas , Nepali Himalaya , great mountain system of Asia forming a barrier between the Plateau of Tibet to the north and the alluvial plains of the Indian subcontinent to the south. The Himalayas include the highest mountains in the world, with more than peaks rising to elevations of 24, feet 7, metres or more above sea level. For thousands of years the Himalayas have held a profound significance for the peoples of South Asia, as their literature, mythologies, and religions reflect. In contemporary times the Himalayas have offered the greatest attraction and the greatest challenge to mountaineers throughout the world.
The Himalayan range is bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush ranges. The China—Nepal border runs across its summit point. Mount Everest attracts many climbers, some of them highly experienced mountaineers. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal known as the "standard route" and the other from the north in Tibet.
